Duke freshman Jared McCain is two games into March Madness, and his 3-pointer is right on time.
With the Blue Devils facing James Madison in the Round of 32, McCain didn’t waste much time making his presence felt, showing off his 3-point shooting stroke by putting on a clinic in the first half.
It took just 16 seconds of game time for McCain to drain his first triple of the game. He proceeded to knock down five more in the first half, entering the locker room with 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 6-of-8 shooting from deep.
McCain also rewrote the record book in the process. Here’s a closer look at the historic performance from Duke’s freshman sensation.
McCain led the charge for a dominant first-half effort from Duke, who took a 47-25 lead into the break.
The 20-year-old nearly outscored James Madison by himself, scoring 22 points while barely missing from the field. His second missed 3-point field goal was a heave to beat the halftime buzzer.
In addition to his 22 points, McCain pulled down four rebounds, dished out an assist, and snagged one steal in the first half. For perspective, his first-half scoring output brought him within 13 points of his career high, which came in a road win over Florida State on Feb. 17.
Here’s a look at the numbers from the first half:
With his 3-point showing, McCain broke Duke’s record for most 3s in an NCAA Tournament game by a freshman. He has another half to tack on to his total and is in the territory of this year’s record (10) and the all-time NCAA Tournament record of 11.
McCain, a 39.7-percent 3-point shooter, showed off the jumper some in Duke’s tournament opener. He finished with 15 points in a relatively low-scoring win over Vermont but built upon the performance to catch fire against James Madison.
